Information and Rules

Training at the ACLO wall

The ACLO wall offers a lot of possibilities to train. There are slab and overhang parts of the wall, routes for beginners and more advanced climbers, hangboards and a bouldering wall. Next to these training possibilities, it is also a good opportunity to meet other climbers and to ask for tips. The training evenings are very popular and you can just go there without signing up. There are always others with whom you can climb. Furthermore, the OpCie takes care of the climbing courses given throughout the year, about which you can read more under “Courses”.

You can only climb at ACLO if you can belay, have material, and have a wallcard, which you can request at the MuurCo. Furthermore, you should know about the rules regarding the ACLO wall.

General rules ACLO Wall

  1. Members who want to climb at the climbing wall need both a wallcard and an ACLO card.

  2. People who want to use the wall for educational purposes need to have an instructor status.

  3. Before climbing, the wallcard needs to be put at the stand at the wall.

  4. Users of the climbing wall are climbing at their own risk and take their own responsibility for the used material.

  5. A member can toprope independently at the ACLO wall only if he/she has the level ‘Indoor Toprope’ or something similar.

  6. A member can lead climb independently at the ACLO wall only if he/she has the level ‘Indoor Lead Climb’ or something similar.

  7. Belaying using a HMS is not allowed (except for educational purposes). It is allowed with for example an eight (used for abseiling), GriGri, ATC etc.

  8. The last person leaving the climbing wall is responsible for making sure that all ropes are bundled up and that the crash pads are against the wall (so not on the volleyball court).

  9. Building is allowed only if one has approval of the wall commissioner.

  10. The grade of difficulty that has to be built should be discussed with the wall commissioner.

  11. The wall commissioner has the right to change or remove the routes.

Wall climbing rules

  1.  Climbers need to be belayed by someone else at all times.
  2. If a climber’s highest status is ‘Indoor Toprope’, he can only climb toprope with other climbers (not lead climbing for example).

  3. A climber can lead climb without the corresponding status only if he is monitored by a supervisor (SKB) or an instructor (SKI). Doing this, he has to be belayed by an independent climber with status ZK-IV or higher.

  4. An SKB or SKI can introduce 1 person.

  5. The last person leaving the climbing wall is responsible for making sure that all ropes are bundled up and that the crash pads are against the wall.

Boulder rules

  1. No belayer is needed for bouldering, but one should use the crash pads at the wall.

  2. After bouldering, the crash pads should be put back against the wall.

Route setting rules

  1. A route setter needs to have approval of the wall commissioner.

  2. A route setter can work alone and is therefore allowed to belay him/herself, as opposed to wall climbers.

  3. A route setter has to take care of the safety of the other users of the wall. Therefore, the area in which holds can fall down has to be marked and if it gets busy, the building has to be stopped.

  4. Building is allowed after discussing it with the wall commissioner.

  5. The grade of difficulty that has to be built should be discussed with the wall commissioner.

  6. The wall commissioner has the right to change or remove the routes.

Instructor rules

An instructor needs to have an instructor’s status.

Route setting

The climbing routes at ACLO are built by GSAC members and are replaced on a regular basis. New route setters are always welcome; please contact the wall commissioner if you wish to build a route. Make sure that you are aware of the ACLO rules regarding route setting (see above).

Irregular schedules because of exams

During the exam period, the availability of the ACLO wall is limited. Check the schedule here to know which hours are available.

Bjoeks

Next to the ACLO wall, a lot of members also climb at Bjoeks. This is a large climbing hall with a lot of different walls, an outside wall and a bouldering cave. There is a discount for those aged 18 to 25 years old (so for most of the students). Have a look at www.bjoeks.nl for more information.
